Meat: Your Partner in Freedom:
I probably haven't mentioned that there actually is a place in Columbia that I don't loathe with every atom in my being, and that's where Leland took me for lunch yesterday: Booches. In fact, I adore this dark pool hall/burger joint/bar where smoke hangs in the air and mingles with the divine smell from the grill. The place was last scrubbed and painted when the New Deal was new and the ventilation system resembles something from Angel Heart, so walking into Booches is like stepping backwards in time. The customers all look like Huey Long and gather at big tables in their shirt-sleeves to drink long-necked beers and pitchers of iced tea over their leisurely chili lunches. It gladdens the heart to be in a refuge where "family" and "values" will never be uttered in the same sentence: signs on the walls read "Parents...Keep your ankle-biting little crumb-gobblers on a leash or I will put them in the cellar to play with the rats," and "Unattended children will be sold as slaves." The Coke comes in a paper cup and the burger on a small square of waxed paper, and my god, the burgers there are sublime. My passionate New Haven loyalties aside, these put Louie's to shame; the smell alone sends me gleefully diving off the vegetarian wagon....
Well, ok, if it will end horror,
